The VHMA Case Study is an educational format in which a fictional practice case is presented and the participants are given the opportunity to offer a remedy or suggestions on the particulars of the case. The fictional practice case is intended to involve the participants in, in-depth study and discussion of all areas of practice management including: Human Resources, Business Law, Insurance and Ethics, Marketing, and Financial and Organizational

Triumphs and Blunders: An Honest Sharing of Implementation Approaches by Those Who Tried Them
Predetermined presenters and topics are selected to share “mini-case studies” on recent changes they have implemented in their practice. Presenters will share the entire story – from the reasons why they decided to make a change to the final outcome, good or bad. Small group discussions will follow each presentation.

BLUNDER: “Leadership: Knowing and Doing Do Not Always Marry”
As leaders, we know our employees drive the success of the organization. We know our priority should be our team. Why then does the ever present task list often take precedence? In this blunder, a few examples will be shared of when the practice leader compromised the importance of the employee/employer partnership by choosing process over people.

TRIUMPH: “Forward Booking - Your Practice Can Be Successful Too”
Practice manager with multiple locations shares her success stories with forward booking. Through improved practice culture and training, they have >80% of active clients with appointments on the books.

BLUNDER: “Bullying Does Not Occur on this Team!”
The team is strong; they produce for the doctors, provide great customer service, and work well together; or so it was thought. Learn how the “cliques” quickly led to a charge of bullying in this practice.

TRIUMPH: “Staff Report Cards”
Tired of those annual evaluations and you can only remember the “not-sogood” performances? Try having your employee generate their own evaluation weekly, then at the annual evaluation, let them tell you their own progress and growth, their education, the goals they met and what their next year’s goals will be.

Senior CVPM Panel – Career Strategies
A panel discussion is designed to provide an opportunity for a group of colleagues to hear several people knowledgeable about a specific issue or topic present information, and discuss personal views and experiences. A VHMA panel discussion also allows opportunity for question and discussion among the audience itself.

Topics include:
• How CVPM certification has made a difference.
• How you got to where you are, (career path).
• Practical career advice.
• Fitting in your own training and development.
• Determining what’s next on your career journey.

2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Appy Hour
During our Appy Hour Session participants are encouraged to share their experiences with off-the-shelf, non-veterinary software or mobile device applications that they have found to be new management “must haves.”
Discussion is focused on sharing new technology that can be effectively transferable to veterinary practice management.


3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Roundtable Discussions
Roundtable Discussions are among the most flexible and informal educational formats offered at VHMA education events. Roundtable Discussions allow for extended discussion among a small cohort of professional colleagues.
Roundtable Discussions are excellent venues for giving and receiving targeted feedback and engaging in-depth discussions. Participants are broken up into groups of 6-10 individuals and are presented with predetermined topics for timelimited discussions.

Topics include:
New this year! Roundtable Discussions will focus on important topics to you at the time of the Exchange. Participants will have the opportunity to identify discussion topics at the time of registration and at the start of the meeting. Bring your biggest challenge and get guidance from your colleagues.

Guest Speaker: Bob Mason
This workshop will emphasize techniques to help new managers make the transition from technician and peer to manager and leader. Learn about what motivation is, conflict: the good, the bad and the useful, 5-steps for solving problems, and how to develop your own leadership responsibility.
