The Sound of Silence

One of my newest “promoted-from-within” managers just experienced the dreaded sound of silence. You know the one…..it’s where you walk into a busy room at the clinic (like the treatment area) and the room falls to a hush. Everyone stops what they were talking about because “someone in charge” just walked through the door. This used to really, really bother me. It was actually one of those things that made me question whether or not I truly wanted to continue down the path of management.

So serendipitous that I saw this. Just yesterday we were planning the Big Apple Veterinary Managers
Association Meeting (don't tell me that you haven't heard of it????) and we were thinking of an icebreaker. I cooked up this idea that we would have 8 signs around the room, each with a practice problem. When you arrive at the meeting you are to hang out next to the problem that resonates the most with you, chew on the pretzels we have there, and chat with the other folk in the same boat. When we go around for intro's, someone from the group has to pipe up about what everyone talked about with regards to the problem ( I have a point, I promise). So now we're deciding on what problems we should have on the wall and one of the managers, Mike Jerva (who'll be sitting for his CVPM in a short while btw) came up with this. It's not precisely what you're addressing here, but it's in the same family. It's that faint-of-heart feeling all of us get when we know we're going up against a wall of potential opposition. Their team has 15 people on it and yours has, at best, two (you and the owner). Mike's problem...Jesus, I'm wordy today...Mike's problem was, 'The Non-enforced Policy Goes Ineffective and Abused: Enter… The Timid Manager
Don't you think that really captures the feeling we often experience?
