Boss or Buddy?

Where do we draw the line as managers, owners or veterinarians when it comes to interpersonal relationships at work? We may want a family-oriented or team environment, but what constitutes a healthy relationship with our co-workers? I attended a session at the Keystone Veterinary Conference this weekend titled Don’t Do As I Do, Do As I Say and 9 Other Disastrous Management Practices, presented by Bash Halow, CVPM, LVT, owner of Halow Consulting. Halow says, “You can’t have a friendship with a subordinate, because they are not allowed to approach the relationship on equal footing.” Yet, this seems to be an internal struggle for many of us.
