Medicated Management is an experiment in journaling for me.
It’s a form of self appointed therapy that I hope will provide benefit
to others as well as myself. The art of managing people is something I
suspect few have ever really conquered. Certainly we have some great
masters to look to; Shawn McVey, Mark Opperman and Denise Tumblin to
name a few, but I would wager that even the greats would say they
continue to improve upon themselves and work diligently to sharpen the
their skills.
I often joke that if I am survive this, my anti-anxiety meds are
going to be have to tweaked or someone should set me up with an IV drip
of my favorite wine. I fuss that I want people (my staff) to have
common sense, to be enthusiastic about this profession and not just show
up for a paycheck. I want clients who are reasonable, who can and will
provide the best for their pets and who won’t bail on the bill at the
last minute. I want doctors who collaborate on cases, who strive to
provide the best medicine they can and who support one another at every
turn. In a word, I want perfection!
(I will pause a moment so you can get back into your chair…I am
certain you fell off it laughing at the list of expectations that could
only exist in a utopia.)
The truth is my anti-anxiety meds probably really do need to be
upped! But I can also chose to approach my role with reasonable
thought, a good sense of humor and the realization that owners and
managers across this profession all deal with the same issues, we are
all on the bus (as Shawn McVey would say) together.
So all aboard my friends… there is plenty of Lexapro and Vino to go around.
