production vs. benefits

Hello everyone-we were wondering if, as practice administrators, we should expect a doctor's production to cover not just salary, but their benefits as well? For example, in a given quarter, if a doctor produces slightly over their salary but less than their benefits, what steps do you recommend we take? Before they get a raise or a higher percentage of production, should they be consistenly producing more than their salary and benefits combined? Thank you all for your help!!
