The Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA) is pleased to announce that Joanne Graham and Jayde Quigley have been selected as the association’s 2015 Emerging Leaders Program scholarship recipients. The prestigious two-year program affords VHMA members in good standing, who are age 40 or younger at the time of application, opportunities to refine their skills and enhance their professional development. The 2015 recipients are rising stars in the field whose commitment to practice management, accomplishments in the veterinary industry and understanding of practice management principles has distinguished them from their peers.
According to VHMA Executive Director, Christine Q. Shupe, CAE, “Many qualified candidates submitted applications this year, however, Joanne and Jayde demonstrated keen understanding of management resources and the application of the profession’s tools. They are both accomplished professionals and I know that they will use the opportunity to play key roles in veterinary management and influence its future direction.”
Meet the Leaders
Joanne Graham is hospital administrator at Prescott Animal Hospital & Equine Center, located in Prescott, Arizona. Graham oversees the mixed practices’ staff of more than 65. Originally intending to apply to medical school, Graham took a part-time position in a veterinary clinic while an undergraduate. Her talents as a manager were recognized by her supervisors and she quickly advanced as a manager. While working in the veterinary field, she discovered a passion for working with people as part of a team. She continued her studies and earned a bachelor’s degree in business management.
Graham has held several practice management positions throughout her career. She recently accepted the position with Prescott Animal Hospital & Equine Center because the large practice with two locations will allow her to further refine her skills.
As an Emerging Leader, Graham is excited about continuing education opportunities and growing professionally. Areas of particular interest to her are strategies for building a cohesive team and human resources development.
Jayde Quigley is the director of operations at Animal Referral & Emergency Center of Minnesota in Saint Paul. This is a second career for Quigley who previously worked in management. In 2007 she became a certified veterinary technician. She later received a bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology and a master’s degree in business administration. Quigley joined her current practice in 2010.
Committed to creating a practice environment where staff members are motivated, connected and working to their full potential, Quigley is looking forward to integrating the skills she acquires through the Emerging Leaders program with her real-life experience. Additionally, she acknowledges that continuing education will help her better address some of the more challenging issues she will encounter as a manager. Her goal is to ensure that there is strong momentum and unity among care providers in order to offer pets the best care possible and clients an exemplary care experience.
The Perks of the Program
Each of the two Emerging Leader candidates receives an annual scholarship of $2,500, which can be applied to the VHMA annual meeting and conference registration and travel costs, the Certified Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM) credential process and the CVPM preparation workbook.
Emerging Leaders are required to give back to the association and share their talents by serving on a standing committee, joining the Emerging Leaders Focus Group, attending VHMA annual meetings and conferences, conducting a VHMA webinar or submitting an article for publication in Practice Pulse, serving as an ambassador to promote the program, and earning the CVPM designation.
