Holiday Crazy

Mental Health for the Holidays

As we come to the end of the year, I will assume that your plate is full (and I don't mean with food at your holiday party!)  The end of the year is always a stressful time for us managers, our team members, and our families.

Last month I drove 12 hours (one way) at Thanksgiving to be with my family in Texas. It was not a small undertaking; it meant I would be out of the hospital during a busy week. Plus, it topped off a month of traveling every weekend.

This month, I have been rather busy getting organized! As I look at my end-of-the-year tasks, that list seems to have a bit more than usual. I am stressed about ensuring we end the year on a high note and giving 110% to ensure my team knows I am here and doing my part.

People talk about work/life balance, but what it is and how it is achieved differs from person to person. As VHMA is a network of colleagues who learn from each other, I want to share just a couple of things I am doing these days to help me find that magical work/ life balance during the holiday season and through the end of the year.

Pick (and use!) A Special Planning Calendar
That invaluable planning calendar helps me focus on all the things that need to be done and when I plan on doing them. Inventory always plays a big role at the end of my year, so I plan how and when I will start and complete it. My reps also want to come by and "say hi," so I work on getting them on the calendar. That way, my day is not interrupted more than usual. It also helps that I put even the most minor family things on the calendar so that I can be there and not miss a thing. Being truly present during this time of year may be one of the best gifts we can give.

Create (and Follow) a To-Do List

My to-do list is often my best friend. This time of year it is divided into three distinct parts. They are my:
Do it Now/ Do it Today Daily List. I often write it on bright Post-it notes to avoid missing it. Today's list – which I am busily checking off – includes reminding staff of their annual reviews and retirement plan meetings, ordering food for our practice holiday party, and purchasing cards for clients.

End of Year to Do List. We all know how important this list is. Financial reporting, inventory, reconciliations, and a dozen other things crowd that list. As practice managers, we all feel relieved when that list is completely checked off.
Tickle List. This one is very important, though less urgent. These are the items that can wait, but I definitely need to revisit them in the New Year. For now, though, I want to turn my attention to my third recommendation below. Because, let's face it, it is a fun one."

Turn Up the Tunes to De-stress
I listen to more music this time of year to help me relax. I also turn up the volume a bit to drown out some of the distractions. The music I choose becomes my personal guide through a hectic time. It lets me take a couple of deep breaths. In the words of Jimmy Buffett, "Breathe in, Breathe out, Move on." Speaking of Jimmy Buffet, I highly recommend his new (and very relatable) songs. "Bubbles Up" is all about getting through the stress; "Like My Dog" is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Pick your favorite musical artist, choose your most inspiring songs, blast them, and see what I mean.

Enjoy this Holiday Season, finish strong, and know that January 1, 2024, can be a new beginning (or perhaps the continuation) of something great!

Sincerely,

Scott Zimmerman, BFA, CVPM
