If veterinary medicine was a casino, in employment terms the practice manager would be “the house” and the associate veterinarian would be “the player.” In an environment, where both parties are generally risk adverse, the option of commission based pay can be the best bet for both the house and the player. Commission based pay provides a way for the practice to transfer some of the risk to the associate and for the associate, commission based compensation presents an opportunity to earn above average wages. This webinar will explore ways to entice both practice owner and associates toward commission based pay.

Presenter: Darren Osborne, MA
Darren Osborne is the Director of Economic Research for the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) and Economic Consultant for the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). Through the VHMA, the CVMA and OVMA, Darren conducts economic research and analyses data in order to provide hundreds of veterinarians and hospital managers with Economic Reports, Personal Benchmark Reports, Reports on Compensation and Benefits for Associate Veterinarians, and Non-DVM Wage Reports. More recently, Darren has launched a full service accounting firm from within the association.

Darren attended York University and completed his Master’s Degree in Economics in 1992. Darren has a tough time sitting still so he relaxes by playing guitar, and training for endurance sports. Last year, Darren ran the Boston Marathon, the Great Canadian Death Race, Anita Rock Swim in San Francisco (2.7 miles), and capped off the year by qualifying for the New York Marathon. Darren knows that a lecture on economics can be the best prescription for insomnia but he promises to keep you awake with a healthy dose of humour and lots of fodder for debate.
