VHMA Emerging Leader
Kristin Graham, BS
Director of Finance
Animal Emergency & Referral Center of MN
The biggest challenge I have faced as a practice manager has been managing the transition from a Client Services team member to the Director of Finance. At some point as I transitioned to my new position, I began to notice that once-respectful team members undermined my authority. I believed that over time I could win their respect.
To me, overcoming a challenge means being introspective and examining your own abilities. Once you know who you are, the next step is to determine where you are going and how you will get there. I found a CVPM to mentor me and guide me through management challenges. She has helped me by bringing me in on many projects to collaborate and gain experience. She has been a wealth of information, and through her guidance, I have built my confidence level.
Next, I took an interest in community volunteering to support the future of veterinary medicine. Volunteering builds my professional skills and has improved my follow-through, organization and knowledge. Finally, I have used continuing education to gain the insights and information to satisfactorily address my daily management responsibilities.
As I employ these methods, I gain more and more respect from the team every single day.
