Change is one of the few guarantees in veterinary medicine. After more than 40 years working in this profession, I sometimes catch myself believing I have finally seen it all. I've managed through a global pandemic, staffing shortages, economic downturns, difficult clients, medical emergencies, changing technology, and the emotional highs and lows that come with caring for animals and the people who love them. Yet veterinary medicine has a way of humbling you. Just when you think you've mastered the unexpected, another challenge appears around the corner to remind you that comfort and routine are often temporary visitors. As hospital managers, we learn quickly ...

Delegation is one of the most challenging and most essential skills for veterinary hospital managers to master. Recently, I was given an opportunity to put this skill to the test when I traveled internationally with my daughter on what truly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime trip. As managers, stepping away from a busy, eight-doctor small animal hospital can feel nearly impossible. The day-to-day operations are constant, unpredictable, and often exhausting. Yet, this experience reminded me that sometimes the best thing we can do for our hospitals, and ourselves, is to step back. The Challenge of Letting Go Like many leaders, I've always trusted and respected ...

Attending the 2026 Veterinary Hospital Manager's Exchange in Pensacola, Florida, was such a rewarding experience, and as the current VHMA President, I couldn't be prouder of the quality continuing education we offer our members. This conference, held February 19–21 at the beautiful Hilton Pensacola Beach, has long been my favorite VHMA event of the year. This year was no exception. What makes the Management Exchange truly special is its size and structure. Participation is intentionally limited to provide an intimate, interactive learning environment where every attendee feels included. The smaller audience means presenters have more time for meaningful discussions, ...

VHMA Insiders’ Insights Commentary January 2026 Brittany Yost, CVPM, CVBL, CCFP Director, Customer Implementation and Engagement, Vetsource As 2025 came to a close, the VHMA’s Insiders’ Insights KPI Dashboard again highlighted a growing imbalance across the veterinary industry. Overall revenue rose 2.4% year-over-year, supported by increases in revenue per patient (+3.9% for VHMA members and +4.3% for non-members), even as patient visits declined modestly (-1.3% to -1.4%) and new client growth fell 5.1%. Every year, without fail, the end of the year arrives faster than I expect. No matter how many calendars I flip through, how many schedules I juggle, or how many times I tell myself this year I'll be more prepared , December still seems to appear overnight. One moment it feels like we're settling into the rhythm of the year, and the next I'm wondering how it's already time to reflect, wrap things up, and prepare to start all over again. Working as a manager in an animal hospital adds its own unique pace to the year. The days are full, often unpredictable, and always meaningful. There are early mornings, long shifts, emotional conversations, and countless ...
