Inspiration motivates through thoughts and feelings.

2020 has arrived!

As you watched the ball drop in Times Square, were you focused on making a resolution that would lead to a better you in 2020? I used to be preoccupied with choosing a great resolution, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve kicked off the year with one, primarily because I became frustrated when I wasn’t able to follow through on my resolutions. It could be that they were too broad, too narrow, or just too ambitious. What I’ve discovered is that I react better to inspiration, which has helped to keep me on the right track to achieve the goals I’ve set for myself.

Resolutions can be easy to make but hard to keep. Inspiration motivates through thoughts and feelings. For example, resolving to be a better listener to your staff is a laudable goal, but it can be difficult to understand the steps necessary to improve listening skills. Inspiring yourself to be a better listener by aspiring to be the type of manager you would like to manage you, causes you to step back and reflect on your actions.

How do I find inspiration? For one thing, I look for inspiration in quotes. When I was studying for the CVPM examination, I was juggling many responsibilities. Although I was motivated, I was also being pulled in so many directions that, at times, I needed an extra push to stick with my study routine. I found a quote that resonated with me. It was my touchstone. Whenever I felt stuck, overwhelmed or exhausted, I would think about it and eventually, my resolve and drive would be restored.

I share this story because so many of you are working hard to be excellent managers, parents, friends, siblings and community members. In a high-stress profession, it’s important to show ourselves the kindness and care we dole out to others. Resolutions can work for some, but for others, they are just another item on the “to do” list. My other gripe with resolutions is they suggest that the person making them is not “enough”… not talented enough, successful enough, or working hard enough. We all have room to improve, but when we take the “should” route, it can become self-defeating.

Where else do I find inspiration to motivate me? I like to surround myself with items that improve my state of mind. Never underestimate the power of a photo. A recent photo of my daughters on an extended family trip to Disney is like a jolt of happiness every time I peek at it.

Just about anything that makes you feel good can be inspiring…music, a book, anything that promotes a positive frame of mind will help you be a more aware manager.

Because I find such value in inspirational quotes, I’ve put together a few of my favorites to keep you inspired in the year ahead:

  • The secret of getting ahead in life is getting started. Mark Twain
  • Approach the New Year with the resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each new day. Michael Josephson
  • All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them. Walt Disney
  • The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Neale Donald Walsch
  • Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts. Winston Churchill

In the year ahead, my wish for all of you is that you find the inspiration to move forward with confidence and clarity. May you remember to take the time to enjoy your colleagues, family, and friends and may you know that your friends at the VHMA are here to assist and support you as you continue your practice management journey.

All the best in 2020!

Michelle--this is always MUCH needed advice! Thank you!
Just curious, what was the motivational quote that you used to get you through it all?
