Strengthening Core Competencies to Advance Management Skills

The Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA) and Patterson Veterinary University (PVU) are pleased to announce a partnership to provide a co-branded series of educational courses to enhance and expand learning opportunities for veterinary practice managers. The series, VHMA/PVU Management Essentials: Strengthening Core Competencies to Advance Management Skills, focuses on:

  • Human resource management,
  • Inventory management,
  • Workplace safety management,
  • Marketing management, and
  • Finance management.
Learners can now sign up for a subscription with Patterson Veterinary University which provides access to all Management Essentials courses, as well as numerous other clinical and management courses. Subscriptions start at just $790/year for 10 learners (add-on seat packages available) and one administrator account. There are courses available for every position and team members will receive unlimited access to courses, including new additions to the educational library. Have additional questions? Continuing Education Courses

Financial Management

Credits: One (1) continuing education credit per module for Financial Management modules 1, 2, 4 and 5; Two (2) continuing education credits for Financial Management module 3; Six (6) total continuing education credits for all Financial Management modules.

All management activities directly impact financial results, but there is often fear associated with managing financial processes. This course alleviates fear by providing education and tools that enhance financial activities through maximizing revenue, smart expense management, and profit planning. This course also covers the interpretation of financial results through benchmarking, key performance indicators (KPIs) and profit and loss (P & L) statements.

Human Resource Management

Credits: One (1) continuing education credit per Human Resource Management module; six (6) total continuing education credits for all Human Resource Management modules

The success of a veterinary practice is largely dependent upon the people within it. Human resource management involves a cycle of HR activities. Each phase in the cycle requires a planned approach that can only come by way of education. This course provides insight into each phase of the cycle and also provides tools for seamless organization and implementation. Human resources are not just a thing you do, it’s the thing that runs your business.

Inventory Management

Credits: One (1) continuing education credit per Inventory Management module; six (6) total continuing education credits for all Inventory Management modules

Inventory plays a significant role in today’s veterinary practice. Without it, most services couldn’t be delivered, nor could products be sold. Therefore, inventory management has become an important skill set impacting the financial performance of the practice. Managing inventory is more than just ordering and receiving goods. This course provides the necessary knowledge and tools to create a complete understanding of the most impactful elements of inventory management.

Marketing Management

Credits: One (1) continuing education credit per module for Marketing Management modules 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 and Foundation Essentials for Digital Marketing; and Two (2) continuing education credits for Marketing Management module 3; Eight (8) total continuing education credits for all Marketing Management modules.

Learn how to bring out the best in your team, focus on positive communication tactics and create an intentional strategy to construct and maintain your reputation. The entire team contributes to the practice’s reputation with every interaction, either intentionally or unintentionally. Design intentional strategies to create marketing plans that support the reputation you want.

Workplace Safety Management

Credits: Two (2) continuing education credits per module for Workplace Safety Management modules 1 and 2; Three (3) continuing education credits for Workplace Safety Management module 3; Seven (7) total continuing education credits for all Workplace Safety Management modules.

Every veterinary practice is responsible for creating a safe working environment by complying with safety regulations. Our course collection includes comprehensive safety-plan templates, so your practice can implement best practices. Create a team approach that includes accountability, responsibility, and clear expectations. Understand the safe handling of hazardous materials and the ability to identify proper personal protective equipment required for your team. This course is the first step in building your OSHA compliant safety program and team training plan.
