Honor Your Colleagues By Casting Your Vote

Amid the emotions and noise accompanying the build-up to the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, you may have overlooked election activity closer to home…The VHMA and CVPM Board of Directors 2019-2021 elections! While it is not the blood sport that politics has become, your voice is critically important in selecting those to lead our association and profession. Keep your eyes on your email because every member eligible to vote will receive an official proxy ballot electronically. Be sure to complete your proxy and make your vote count.

If you haven’t seen it yet, the slate of nominees for the VHMA and CVPM boards is impressive. These individuals have dedicated themselves to their practices, careers, and our association. The Nominating Committee has scrutinized potential candidates to ensure they have the skills, abilities, and commitment to lead the Association into the next decade. I am sure that you won’t be disappointed. This diverse group of professionals each have a unique background and experiences and share a burning passion to contribute to the advancement of the association.

It is this type of passion that has driven our association forward for over 30 years — a selfless willingness to share time, knowledge and treasure to improve our profession. The success of the VHMA and the growth of CVPM was achieved because of volunteers like these. Individuals who were courageous enough to raise their hand and say “I’ll help!” I guarantee you that everyone brave enough to step up received way more in return. I am proud of all our volunteers and grateful for their commitment.

Volunteers are the glue of this association. It is this willingness to share and desire to make things better for our colleagues that continue to propel the VHMA and elevate the value of CVPM in our industry. I challenge you to consider how you can give back to make a difference for other members. We need you, and I know you will make a difference.

I began volunteering for the VHMA on the Marketing Committee. At the time, our association was half as big as it is now, and volunteers were sparse. Before I knew it, I was nominated to be a board member. We were asked to wear many hats. Not only did we serve on the board we were also committee chairs and often were asked to do the committee work. Thanks to our continued growth and members increasing willingness to serve, we now have many volunteers building our association. From table facilitator at round tables to task force members to members of the board, there are countless ways to contribute even if you have limited time.

With all of this discussion about members volunteering, I would be remiss not to recognize how easy our VHMA staff makes it be successful. With the growth of the VHMA, our staff has grown. These are the individuals who truly do the heavy lifting and get the work done. They truly make it easy to have an impact regardless of how much time you have available to volunteer.

So when you see that ballot hit your inbox, don’t overlook it. If you’re like me, you probably have an embarrassingly large number of unread emails that you battle with each day. Just remember that those colleagues who raised their hand are asking for your consideration. Please help me honor them by casting your ballot. I promise the voting process is quick and far easier than choosing between the slate of incredible candidates.

See you at the Annual Conference,

Jim Nash, MHA, CVPM
VHMA President

P.S. – Please join me in recognizing our very own Executive Director, Christine Shupe as the 2019 VMAE Executive of the Year. Congratulations Christine!
