Begin Again

Begin Again

Would you like to join me in treating April 1, the start of the second quarter, like it’s the start of a new year?

For me – and it seems like for many of you, too – January didn’t seem all that different from a long blur of months that came before it. I was again sidetracked working in the business, not on the business. I was still scrambling to clean up and keep up!

But now it’s March.

The Virus Thing’s numbers are all going in the right direction, and bits of normalcy has come back to our lives. The weather is changing; the light is changing and soon will linger longer. Before long, the kids will be out of school. Spring is the season of renewal and new beginnings, and I’m ready to start something new at my practice

My goal is to grow professional development opportunities that fit each staff member. I came back from VHMA’s February 2022 Management Exchange inspired, energized, and refocused on training. My big takeaway from that conference was that professional development and training have the most impact on employee satisfaction and employee retention.

Lightbulb moment #1 - while professional development is already a core focus for us, our training and onboarding process can be so much better than it is. We’ve got to get back to the basics and ensure that everyone has the same training fundamentals covered every time. I love growing and developing team members, but I can’t jump ahead without ensuring they have the basics in place.

Lightbulb moment #2 - I am not the right person to train people or execute training programs. I’m not good at that, and I’m okay with that, but I need to find the right person or people to bring the right programs to my team.

I’m feeling hopeful, energized, and excited again!

So how about you? Is there anything you’re taking on at your practice, clinic, or hospital this spring?

Please share your ideas in the comments.

Sincerely,
Jessica Speas, CVPM, SPHR, PHR-ca, SHRM-SCP, CCFP
VHMA President
