Managers Matter: A Thank You and a Challenge

Thank You

As I look ahead to the Annual Conference in New Orleans, I find myself reflecting on the incredible people who make up this organization. Serving as VHMA President over the past two years has been an honor and a privilege. It’s also been a reminder of something we don’t say often enough: managers matter.
Veterinary managers keep their hospitals running– quietly, consistently, and with a level of commitment that often goes unnoticed. Most of us go about our work behind the scenes, serving as the buffer between ownership, the team, and clients. And while that’s part of the job, it doesn’t mean it should go unacknowledged.
So, for my final blog as President, I want to say thank you. I also want to leave you with a challenge: don’t underestimate your impact, and don’t forget to take stock of what you bring to the table.
Gratitude in the Day-to-Day
Gratitude tends to be something we associate with personal relationships, but it also has a place in our professional lives. Yes, the day-to-day of veterinary management doesn’t always feel world-changing, but it does matter. Creating an environment where your team can thrive, where clients feel supported, and where pets receive quality care– that’s work worth being proud of.
There’s no getting around it: some days are hard. But when you take a step back, chances are you’ll see far more wins than losses. I know I do. I’m especially grateful for the VHMA community and the way our members support one another, whether that’s through the Open Forum, committee work, or a casual check-in at a conference.
The Role of Recognition
We all want to feel that our efforts matter. And while we may be quick to praise our team members when they go above and beyond, we’re often less inclined to acknowledge our own hard work.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself, and your hospital, is to stop and recognize your accomplishments. No, you don’t need a standing ovation for every staffing schedule solved or client conflict resolved, but give yourself credit where it’s due, and extend that same recognition to your peers.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the many VHMA members who serve on committees, lead programs, and contribute in ways that aren’t always visible, but are always essential. Your work makes a difference.
The Need to Belong
Veterinary practices are filled with people who just want to feel like they belong. As managers, we have the responsibility– and the opportunity– to make that possible.
Whether it's onboarding a new employee, checking in with a longtime team member, or showing up as a steady presence, we help set the tone for inclusion. That same sense of belonging is at the heart of VHMA. Some members are highly involved; others quietly draw strength from knowing they’re part of something bigger.
Whatever your level of engagement, I hope you’ve found a community here. And if you haven’t yet, come to New Orleans. Join us at a roundtable. Introduce yourself to someone new. There’s a good chance you’ll hear what many of us have said before: “I’ve found my people.”
Looking Back and Ahead
As I wrap up my term as VHMA President, I’m filled with appreciation. Serving in this role has been a career highlight, made possible by the support of our board, committees, staff, and members. It’s truly been a team effort.
I’ll continue on as Immediate Past President, advising and supporting the work ahead. I’m confident that our incoming President, Leslie, will bring new energy and fresh perspective to the role, and I look forward to cheering her on alongside you all.
In closing, I encourage each of you to take a moment to recognize your own contributions. Look around at what you’ve helped build. Veterinary managers don’t often seek the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve it.
It’s been an honor to work alongside so many dedicated, thoughtful professionals. Let’s keep moving forward, together.
See you in New Orleans,
Scott

I highly recommend that Scott's farewell article be shared widely with veterinary hospital managers and other leaders.  Scott has done a remarkably good job as President of the VHMA, and he absolutely is not one who seeks the limelight.  When you see him in Atlanta, ask him about some of his recent accomplishments at his hospital and you'll quickly discover his source of prophetic wisdom.
