The Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA), an association dedicated to enhancing and supporting veterinary management professionals through education, certification, resources, and networking, is pleased to announce that it will serve on the newly-launched Commission for a Diverse, Equitable and Inclusive Veterinary Profession. Organized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), participants include leading veterinary organizations committed to acting as champions for social justice and diversity, equity, and inclusiveness (DEI).

This unique collaboration is intended to advance excellence in veterinary medicine, while promoting a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. These actions will not only help to make veterinary medical careers and leadership more accessible and fulfilling for a broader range of individuals, but will lead to better connections with an increasingly diverse clientele, so that veterinary professionals can work more effectively with them to improve the health and wellbeing of patients. The commission was created to promote change in the industry and will establish actionable outcomes for short-, medium- and long-term goals with defined timeframes. Initially, the commission plans to:

  • Promote the value of DEI throughout the veterinary profession
  • Increase diversity among veterinarians, veterinary school applicants and enrollees, interns, residents, and board-certified specialists
  • Encourage and assisting veterinary medical associations and animal health companies to measure and improve DEI

In addition to VHMA, the commission's organizational members include the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), Veterinary Medical Association Executives (VMAE), National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), and Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA).

“VHMA is an association that strives to be welcoming and responsive to the needs and concerns of our members, the industry, and society,” said VHMA Executive Director Christine Shupe. “Serving on this commission is a great opportunity to be immersed in a long overdue conversation that will spearhead change and promote action. VHMA is honored to play a role.”
